Preparing For Nanowrimo Part 2

It's three days from November and I've decided that for Nanowrimo, I'm going to do a rewrite of a first draft I finished earlier this month.  This will be the third time that I've decided to do Nanowrimo, and I hope that this will be the first time I win.

I've been preparing for Nanowrimo, by scanning in all the handwritten pages of the first draft, rereading it and taking notes on what needs to expanded and marking what will need to be cut.  A lot of this will change when I'm actually rewriting, but it's a start.

Preparing for Nanowrimo

It's October and it's almost time to prepare for Nanowrimo.  I've decided to do a rewrite this year.  Last year, 2014, I decided to finish a story I was working on rather than start an new project.

I have three short stories I can rewrite, and two completed first drafts.  I'll start prepping by listing out the ways I can improve upon each story and what new plot lines need to be added.  It's mostly adding in story lines and typing up the original handwritten drafts.

I'll write more as Nanowrimo gets closer and I have more to say.

Current Writing Projects

I've decided to talk a little about the projects that I currently have on the burner.

1. A collection of short stories, tentatively named The Eye and the Heart.   All the stories revolve around a ensemble of characters and the titular Eye and Heart.  I have one of the stories titled The Theft, currently waiting for another round of editing and I'm working on writing the others.

2. A rough draft of a novella, that needs a rewrite, to concentrate the plot line now that I understand what it is better now.

3. The Iron War, my ongoing free to read story currently uploaded to Wattpad.  I only have one chapter up so far but I am continuing to work on it.

4.  Last but certainly not least is The Stolen Sword.  It has some of my best writing so far.   I don't want to talk to much about it just in case, I end up loosing enthusiasm, as has happened to many times before.

My Writing Process

What do you do when you write?  Each person has a different way of getting their thoughts down.   Some type it up on typewriters, and others at the computer.  This is how it works for me.

1. Writing

I've tried many different ways of writing, but recently I've settled on writing everything out long hand.  I don't know why but it's easier for me to get the words out onto the paper. I vastly prefer to write out everything on paper first then type it up as the first stage of editing.  It forces me to do an extra edit.

Another advantage is that if I get an idea I can write it down right away, and not have to wait until I can get to a computer. At the end of the writing after I have finished writing I scan it into the computer, because not only I have it backed up but it makes the next stage much easier.

2. Editing

I do all my editing on the computer as I can turn on the track changes and look at what I have changed in between different versions of the story.  As I mentioned before I have my scanned PDF files pulled up on one side of the computer and the open document on the other and I can just type the rough draft into the document, then if I have a better idea I can leave the rough draft and do a rewrite.'

This is my writing process so far.  Maybe as I get more experience with writing and more familiar with my process I'll revisit this.

Writers Block

Writers Block is something that every writer has to deal with. Usually this means that the writer has to think more about what happens next in the story.  What can you do to get over it?

1.    Work on something else.

If you run into writers block on one story, you can always go work on another project.  Sometimes just getting out of the mindset that you had before, can get rid of your writers block. If you prefer to only work on one project at a time, research something related to the scene that your blocked on.

2.  Switch POV
Sometimes the best way to work out what happens next is to switch to another POV.    Your hero knows to much of what is going on, or you want to keep the hero's daring plan a secret from the audience?  Change Point Of View to someone else, but a random bystander, secondary character or the villain.   This can provide interesting insights into what is happening and you can always rewrite it if you don't like it.

3. Research

Sometimes spending the time to research aspects and the small details can change the way that your story works out. Maybe you need to know the exact type of herbs that grow in the area to be used in medicine or poison.

4.  Relax

If all else fails go doing something that you enjoy.  Go take a walk around the block,  call up a old friend and chat with them, catch up on your chores.  Sleep on it and the next day with any luck the writers block will be gone.

What are some of your suggestions for getting rid of writers block?
